LAD #24: Populist (People's) Party Platform

The Preamble:

America is in moral, political, and economical depreciation. The nation is full of voter suppression and violence between opposing races. Public opinion is highly censored in the newspapers and other forms of expression. This led to a highly corrupt government that consisted of two dominating parties. Additionally, labor was highly demoralized. The formation of unions and other protests was prohibited by the government. This fostered a widening wage gap. Economically, America suffered immensely. Split between two different metals, silver and gold, hard money was not readily available, and inflation skyrocketed. This lack of funds is inadequate to bolster the surplus of agricultural goods being produced at the time and make up a large majority of the nation's profits. To counter these problems, the government should be returned to the common people who make up the majority of Americans.

The Platform:

First, America should embrace the newfound concept of unions, which would give more power to the common people. Second, industry should be able to keep their profits as it not only benefits the industry, but the nation as a whole. Third, railroads should have an established owner and regulations on the labor and prices on railroads. With regard to finance, America should have one set currency that solves the nation's problems with debt and lowers the annual taxes. Transportation, specifically, should be owned by the government with the needs of the people in mind. Lastly, land should not be monopolized for government speculation, rather, it should be given to the people to further business.

The Resolutions that made up the Expression of Sentiments:

The Expression of Sentiments states that the Populist Party demands a fair election and voting rights, they ask that the taxes the people have paid go toward lower taxes in other areas. The populist party addresses fair monetary treatment of ex-Union soldiers, and attack the wrongdoings of the laissez-faire government in prohibiting the formation of unions to protect workers rights. The People's Party asked the government to abolish the Pinkerton system, which served as an imposing standing army. They also advocate the limiting of the Federal government and a more direct election of Senators. The Populist Party closes by stating their support of the Knights of Labor, a prominent labor union, and the union's efforts in fighting the tyranny of businessmen.

Donald Trump's 2016 Presidential Election
Donald Trump was considered a Populist candidate in the 2016 Presidential Election because he advocated for an increase in jobs for the working-class and a decrease in the number of unemployed Americans. This is similar to many of the ideals expressed in the Populist Party Platform as Trump shares the beliefs that immigration should be limited to open up jobs in America to its current citizens. Also, he highlighted how important it is to run the government for the people rather than create an all-encompassing Federal government.
