LAD #23: McKinley's War Message
Summarize:
The three years of warfare in Cuba has threatened America's relationship with Spain. This is because by constantly engaging in battles with the Cuban revolutionaries Spain causes America to enforce their neutrality laws, suffer from loss of trade and commerce, and be offended by the barbaric battle practices both sides have used which go against human morality. McKinley laments the state of Cuba, a once prosperous nation diminished to destitution, and pleas for the chance to help the revolutionaries' gain the independence they desire. The president and his administration that preceded McKinley attempted to make peace between Spain and Cuba, but Soain refused to any agreements. With no end to the war in sight, McKinley realized he had to be the cause of the termination of the war, not just for the sake of America, but for Spainards and Cubans to. Additionally, McKinley states that the proclamation of neutrality is not a proclamation of peace, but rather a stament that conveyed America's lack of empathy towards nations struggling in battle who needed America's help.
Why McKinley wants to enter war:
For the sake of humanity McKinley wants to end the barbaric bloodshed that is occuring in Cuba. He wants Cubans to have a right over their property and homes. Additionally, America itself is being harmed by this Cuban revolution, because of trade and commerce blockades. Lastly, the constant rebellion is a threat to the peace and business of America.
America fought for peace and independece spreading their democratic beliefs throughout the world. However, their right to interfere in many nation's wars was highlgy controversial. America itself takes two stances on the subjuct: interferent or isolationist. During and after the Cold War marked a high point in US interference. This is because not only did America wish to spread Democracy, but they also had to stop the spread of Communism. This led to their participation in the Korean War and Afghanistan War. Additionally, Cuba was subject to US interference once again as America participated in the Bay of Pigs Invasion.
