LAD #1: Mayflower Compact/Fundemental Orders of CT

1. What concepts are included in the Mayflower Compact?

The Mayflower Compact outlines the reasons for why the colonists came to America. Specifically, to plant the first colony in Virginia, spread Christianity, and Honour their King and Great Britain. The compact also describes the governing body and types of laws that colonist are expected to follow. The colonists also state their complete submittance to the government of Great Britain.

2.  How does the Mayflower Compact reflect an attachment to both the "Old" and "New" worlds?

The "old" world is reflected through the repeated mention of the colonist's King and how the colonists are described as loyal subjects. It is clear to see how these colonists have no desire to become independent and they are content as a colony. However, the writers also touched upon the governing style of this new colony. This undoubtedly new style of thinking leads to the more democratic outlook charicteristic of the "new" world.

3. How did the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut differ from the Mayflower Compact?

The Fundamental Orders of Conneticut differed from the Mayflower Compact by providing a more detailed outline of how their government functioned. Additionally, whereas the Mayflower was packed with references to their mother country, the Fundamental Orders focused more on the local government and reflected an overall feeling that support from Great Britain was not needed.

4. What prompted the colonists of Connecticut to take this approach to government, i.e. use of a constitution?

The colonists were prompted to create a constitution mainly because they needed unity and peace in their colony. The first days of colonization in America were uncertain and the new colonists desired the stability that a fair and unified government would provide. Additionally, many people who emigrated to America desired the new opportunities and freedom that Britain's strict class structure and monarchy did not provide. This led to the colonists enacting a more democratic constitution.

5. In what significant way(s) does the Fundamental Orders reflect a fear of and safteguard against the usurping of power by one person or a given few?

The Fundamental Orders focused on the many stipulations of gaining an important governmental position. By having a yearly Electoral Court, where many positions, such as governor and magistrate, were chosen, the colonists expressed their fear that one person could override the electoral process. Additionally, the more important government positions had additional rules, many stated that a person could only hold their position for one year at a time. All these factors went into limiting the powers of individual people and therefore limited the chance of one person unrightfully taking full control of the colony.
